My passion for animal care started early. At around eight years old, with the help and support of my family, I began walking dogs and caring for pets in my neighbourhood. What started as a childhood love of animals grew into a lifelong commitment to understanding, working with, and caring for them.

Today, I have 23+ years of hands-on experience with animals, including 13+ years of professional experience across animal care, grooming, dog training and behaviour, veterinary care, pet sitting, boarding, daycare, and more.

Over the years, I've worked with animals across a wide range of species, breeds, temperaments, backgrounds, and needs — from everyday family companions to working and high-drive dogs, animals requiring additional medical or behavioural support, birds, reptiles, small animals, exotics, horses, and livestock.

Working across different areas of the animal-care industry also gave me the opportunity to see many very different philosophies in practice. Some large-scale environments relied heavily on standardized procedures designed for efficiency, even when individual animals didn't fit neatly into those systems. In smaller facilities, I encountered the opposite problem at times: highly specific rules or routines that weren't always grounded in the behaviour or needs of the individual animal.

Dog training exposed me to similar extremes. I've worked around approaches relying almost entirely on positive reinforcement, where unwanted behaviours weren't always addressed clearly or consistently, as well as versions of “balanced” training that relied too heavily on corrections and pressure. In those cases, a dog might stop displaying a behaviour to avoid a correction without necessarily learning what they should do instead.

For years, my work included boarding, grooming, and handling working K9s in the United States, including dogs working with Border Control, TSA, military, and police handlers. Working around driven, highly trained working dogs gave me additional experience with the structure, communication, handling, and individual management these dogs require.

My work with animals extends beyond companion and working dogs as well. I've spent years riding and working with horses, including competing in Escaramuza, a traditional Mexican equestrian sport performed through coordinated, high-speed riding routines. That time in the saddle further developed my understanding of animal communication, timing, body language, confidence, and the relationship between an animal and its handler.

Those experiences helped shape the middle-ground approach I use today. In training, I believe dogs deserve clear communication in both directions: yes, that's what I want and no, that's not what I want — here's what to do instead. I use training tools when appropriate to communicate boundaries and interrupt or discourage unwanted behaviours, but correction isn't the foundation of my training. Positive reinforcement, engagement, repetition, consistency, and capturing & rewarding desirable behaviour do most of the heavy lifting.

My goal isn't simply to suppress behaviour. It's to help the dog understand the difference between desirable and undesirable choices, reinforce the behaviours we want to see more often, and build skills that remain reliable beyond the training session. The same philosophy carries into my broader animal care: structure matters, but structure should serve the individual animal — the animal shouldn't have to fit a predetermined system.

That experience has taught me one thing above all: good animal care isn't one-size-fits-all. Every animal communicates differently, responds differently, and has their own needs, boundaries, routines, and personality.

Whether I'm working with a high-energy dog, a nervous cat, a talkative bird, a reptile with very particular husbandry requirements, a finnicky horse, or an entire multi-pet household, my goal is the same: understand the animal in front of me and give them the care they actually need.
